Jay Newman
Jay Newman joined The Athens Group in 2000 as a Principal and Chief Operating Officer where he is responsible for the company’s financial affairs and joint ventures along with many of its development projects including the identification of development opportunities, the processing of entitlements and the raising of equity capital. The Athens Group is a luxury hotel and residential development company that specializes in environmentally sustainable projects. Some of Athens’ projects include the Montage Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina, Montage Beverly Hills, Montage Laguna Beach, Montage Deer Valley in Park City, Utah, Four Seasons Hualalai in Kona, Hawaii, Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch in Colorado’s Vail Valley, and the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay on the coast in the Bay Area of California.

Jay has more than 39 years of experience in commercial real estate with a focus on development including entitlements and design, acquisitions, joint ventures, finance and dispositions. Currently, Jay is focusing on the development of the Naples Beach Club, a Four Seasons Resort, in Naples, Florida, which will commence construction in early 2022. The 216-room luxury resort lies on a 125-acre Gulf of Mexico site with 1,000 lineal feet of white sand beach and an 18-hole golf course. The project also includes 58 luxury beach-front residences along with up to 125 luxury residences next to the project’s golf course.

In addition, Jay was primarily responsible for the acquisition, entitlement, financing, design, and construction of the mixed-use Montage Beverly Hills in California which was the first and only public-private partnership with the City of Beverly Hills, the acquisition, re-entitlement and redesign of the West Hollywood mixed-use Edition hotel and residential project with Marriott International and the acquisition, re-entitlement and design of the mixed-use One Beverly Hills project with the Wanda Group on the 8-acre former Robinsons-May site in Beverly Hills. Jay was also active in the planning, entitlement and design for the redevelopment of the Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica.

In 1996, Jay joined Lend Lease Real Estate Investments, Inc. where he was one of the founders of Lend Lease Development (US) and the Lend Lease Resort Development Program. As a Senior Vice President, Jay focused on the development of resorts (including the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay, California with The Athens Group), shopping centers and office buildings.

In 1995, Jay joined Highridge Partners in Los Angeles as Senior Vice President of the Summit Commercial Properties Division, where he focused on the purchasing, repositioning, leasing, management and sale of shopping centers and office buildings on both a one-off and a portfolio basis.

Jay was one of the founding members of the national real estate law firm of Pircher, Nichols & Meeks in Los Angeles where he was a managing partner and a real estate transaction attorney.

Jay received his undergraduate degree in applied economics (summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of California at Berkeley in 1978, and his MBA and Juris Doctorate degree from Stanford University in 1982. He is a guest lecturer at the UCLA School of Public Policy and Planning and a frequent speaker at the USC School of Law, ULI, Meet the Money, Bisnow, the Southern California Development Forum and CLE International.

Jay sits on the Board of Directors of the Naples Chamber of Commerce and is active in Beverly Hills Rotary. He is also involved in Imagine LA. Jay and his family reside in Los Angeles, California.
