Richard Branson – founded Virgin Group’s hospitality subsidiary will open a 40-story, 250-room hotel in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood.
This will be the Miami-based Virgin Hotels first South Florida location at 1040 S. Miami Ave. The project is expected to break ground next year and open in 2023, according to a statement from Virgin Hotels.
The site of the planned hotel is owned by Miami-based FX South Miami, LLC. It purchased the 25,000-square-foot lot in 2011 for $5 million, according to county records. The lot is currently occupied by two different retail and residential buildings.
The hotel will be managed by Virgin Hotels. Key Biscayne-based Blue Jay Capital is the developer and Atlanta-based BLUR Workshop is the architect.
“I’m personally very passionate about this property, as it brings Virgin Hotels into a city that holds a great deal of significance for us,” said Virgin Hotels CEO Raul Leal. “In addition to being my home, Miami is the headquarters of Virgin Hotels, so this is a milestone that has been a long time coming.”
The project includes 15-floors of residential space operated by Blue Jay. The building will have 150 micro units and co-living units. Micro units will be under 400 square feet, while the co-living units range from three to four bedrooms. Residents will have access to all the hotel amenities.
The tower would include a spa and 15,000 square-feet of meeting and event space.
Virgin Hotels Miami will also house food and beverage concepts including the bar restaurant Commons Club, the café Funny Library Coffee Shop and a rooftop music and entertainment venue.
The rooftop will feature a three-tiered pool terrace complete with a lounge area and event space.
The development plans to include a car elevator system for valet parking.
Virgin Hotels currently has hotels open in Chicago and San Fransisco with a Dallas location slated to open by the end of the year. The Virgin Group subsidiary has broken ground for hotels in New York, Nashville, New Orleans and Edinburgh, U.K. Hotels have been announced for Palm Springs and Silicon Valley in California.
