Delivering a unique experience while remaining true to their DNA, Viceroy is receiving a lot of attention. Bill Walshe shares how Hotel Zena celebrates female empowerment and inclusivity and their expansion into the Algarve, Portugal.

Travel & Leisure has named Viceroy among the top ten hotel brands in the world. That is quite an achievement. How have you differentiated yourself in an abundant luxury market?

We are hugely proud to have been ranked in the top 10 hotel brands in the world by Travel + Leisure. This is a testament to the passion and dedication of our colleagues throughout the portfolio, who embody and activate Viceroy’s ideology in everything we do. We differentiate by remaining faithful to our essence, which can be described as ‘consistent individuality.’ We love the contradictory nature of this position, which challenges us to make sure we have sufficient consistency of process to allow us to deliver flawlessly, constantly, but where that consistency stops short of suffocating the spirit of spontaneity, authenticity, and vibe for which our brand has become synonymous.  At Viceroy, we are human beings who make other human beings happy, and we love it.

Your hotels are each very unique to their environment through very deliberate collaboration with local artists and preserving the original architecture. Can you expand on your vision for the brand?

Working with local artists has become such an integral part of our DNA that we gave it a name: A Canvas for Discovery. Our site-specific artist series reflects Viceroy’s dedication to individuality and creativity that spans painters, sculptors, photographers, and musicians and offers our guests not only beauty but the opportunity to connect with and discover local talent.  Our intentions go beyond having artwork to fill our walls in that we continue to nurture our relationships with these artists and create new and exciting ways to bring their visions to life within the Viceroy family.

Viceroy at Ombria Resort Algarve

Hotel Zena has been thoughtfully designed to recognize female empowerment and gender equality. Can you tell us more about this hotel designed by women for everyone?

Hotel Zena celebrates female empowerment through provocative art and design in Washington, D.C.’s trendy Logan Circle. Designer Andrea Dawson Sheehan’s intention for the urban space was to amplify the courage and perspectives of women through the hotel’s curated art. With over 60 pieces of original art created by artists locally and globally, Hotel Zena is part hotel and part art gallery.  Though designed by women, the property is inclusive of all genders, races, and sexualities; a haven for the liberated forward thinker where an atmosphere of strength and femininity live in harmony.

I believe Viceroy will open its second European resort in Algarve, Portugal, in 2023. What can guests expect, and do you have any further plans for expansion?

Viceroy at Ombria Resort Algarve will open next year in the inland hills of Portugal’s Algarve region. The resort is set amidst miles of citrus groves, working farms, and quaint villages and will feature 76 luxury guest rooms and suites, 65 residences, a modern spa, eight innovative dining venues, and a landmark 18-hole golf course.  We are proud to boast that the new resort’s organic balance of sophistication and local authenticity make it supremely unique to the region and will appeal to jet-setters and families alike.  We are also thrilled to open Viceroy Bocas del Toro Panama in 2024, featuring 186 modern guest rooms, including 42 overwater villas with their own private plunge pool and breathtaking views of the Caribbean coast.
